Zhen xian bao
or Chinese thread books
Zhen xian bao or Chinese thread books were made and used by the women of the Miao and Dong minorities, in remote south west China. They would store their embroidery threads, patterns and needles in the ingeniously layered paper boxes.
Zhen xian bao translates to ‘needle thread pockets’.
Lockdown presented me with the time to concentrate on learning these intricate folded structures and to develop my own take on the them. I also got to use some of my favourite decorative papers, and an excuse to order more.
You can use them for simple sewing needs, or stamps and paper clips, or simply to hide your secrets away.
